Standard 4.7     Accountability for Learning

Does the teacher demonstrate accountability for the learning of individual students, student learning in general, and the overall excellence of the school?

I am responsible for the learning that takes place in my classroom.  I adjust test timeframes around what learning takes place in class.  I will re-teach information if I feel that the students do not fully grasp the concepts.  I do not tolerate distractions and will not hesitate to individually talk with a student if they are interfering with the learning environment.  I expect students to be in class on time, have their shirts tucked in, and have their IDs properly displayed.

With our specific program student population, our student may be absent frequently.  These absences not only effect their learning, it effects their grade as well.  Whey they are given an unverified absence they receive a failing grade on their work ethic.  They have to be in class to learn.  If they were to not go to work, they would lose their jobs.  They need to see constant and consistent reinforcement of repercussions for their actions.

In my classroom, grades, behavior contracts, and attendance contracts are necessary.  Students cannot learn when they are not present in class.  However, reinforcement can be consistent and they can learn from their absences.  When a student’s absences become alarming to me, I call a meeting with the student, the parent(s), lead teacher, and administrator to establish an attendance contract.

I keep a grid of each class that helps me visualize where the class is as a whole.  I also print one for each student so they can see their individual progress.

I keep a daily Work Ethic grade for each student.  At times for a three week grading period, I am entering over 20 grades per student.  Staying on top of recording these grades is paramount in my accountability for the learning of these students.

I contact parents, administrators, coaches, etc.. when concerns arise.  I also have attended many IEP, manifestation, and 504 meetings and continue to make myself available to do so.
