Standard 2.7     Active Student Engagement

Does the teacher plan and implement activities and assignments to actively engage students in learning in meaningful ways?

In all levels of Career Prep Math lessons are carefully planned to incorporate the district established comps.  Students not only learn the required information but they also get the chance to actively participate in class activities that supplement the material.  Many times through exploration and center activities, students will grasp concepts of multiple comps without even knowing it.  At times our books are put aside and other methods, such as the internet when we research jobs and salaries, are used to supplement learning.

When studying measurement, I used the opportunity to incorporate this learning with cooking.  I arranged for my class to cook with the TMD class.  My students picked 3 desert recipes from recipe books checked out from the Cyber Center or from the internet.  Once we determined what 3 recipes we were going to make, we went grocery shopping for the items at the local IGA grocery store.
