Standard 2.6     Questioning and Discussion Techniques

In all levels of Career Prep Math, I will use a variety of instructional strategies to assess student learning.  For example, while discussing calculating mortgages, I used the dirt road, paved road, and yellow brick road assessment.  I asked the students who didn’t understand anything we covered to move to the designated dirt road area.  Those that understood some, but not all of it, were asked to move to the paved road.  Finally, those that felt they had a firm grasp of the concept were asked to move to the yellow brick road designation.  I use this questioning and assessment quite often as this not only affords me the opportunity to make an assessment, it gets the students up and moving.  Questions are also tied into the lesson objectives.  I also try at every vantage point to supplement class discussion with many personal experiences relating to math. Students are encouraged to ask questions on the topic to further clarify information.
