Bengals Softball team No. 8 in National Academic Rankings

The Blythewood High School Softball team has recently been honored by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) and the girls got game Academic Award for its outstanding academic performance during the 2008-09 school year. The Bengals posted a 4.015 team GPA for its 12 letterwinners, good enough for No. 8 in the country.

Blythewood's previous high ranking was No. 10 in 2005-06 academic year. The Bengals have been in the top 25 each year since the school opened.

In addition to the team award, nine individual letter winners were named NFCA Academic All-America Scholar Athletes for having a GPA higher than 3.5. Those student-athletes are: current seniors Paige Hartfield, Paige Owczarczak, Kelly Owens, and Hillary Stewart; junior Michaela Brasington; freshmen Ellen Cordova and Bailey Newman; eighth grader Lori Owens; and 2009 graduate Jennifer Jameson. All 12 letter winners had over a 3.1 GPA for the 2008-09 school year.

The Bengals will try extend its on field success as well after winning region championships in each of the school's first four seasons. Blythewood opens its 2010 season at Airport Wednesday, March 10.
